The original laminate in the boat’s layered construction is called gel coat and gives the boat both color and gloss. The structural layers of fiberglass are applied to the “back” side of the gel coat. This is opposite of the way most other products are manufactured, where the last step in production is to spray on the finish. When it comes to production-built boats, gel coat is the starting point.
